In-house ultrasounds

The project has helped place ultrasound equipment in sixteen states since 2004. Private donations have supported training staff to use the technology and the purchase of equipment. The project is being supported by a $10,000 SAEMF research grant. This grant is aimed at understanding the learning curve associated with point-of-care ultrasounds. It should address the patient and health outcomes of using the technology as well as the quality assurance of the device. In addition, the research should evaluate the use of the technology in non-academic settings.
Point-of-care ultrasounds are used by doctors to examine the fetus and provide an accurate estimate of the gestational age. This can improve the birthing experience for many women. A more precise assessment of the gestational age can reduce induced labors and complications of prematurity. To ensure that all women have access to this service, appropriate targeting of maternal and neonatal care is needed.
Successful completion of the project will be demonstrated by submitting an abstract to the SAEM Annual Meeting and a manuscript to a peer-reviewed publication. The number of awards made depends on the quality of applications and the availability of funds. If there are not enough funds to support all of the applications, the SAEMF may discontinue funding. Also, the grant will only be awarded when the Grants committee determines that the applicant is worthy of receiving the award.
Applicants must be currently enrolled in an ACGME-approved residency program and should not have received a previous SAEMF/AEUS Research Grant. Those who do receive an award will be required to report the work they have completed in the grant year and to provide a brief update to the SAEMF. Additionally, applicants must have the support of a faculty mentor with expertise in point-of-care ultrasounds.
One-stop care
